Best Baby Carrier Cover, Baby Carrier Hoodie & Babywearing Coat (2025): babywearing in winter?

Let me tell you this: there is absolutely no reason to worry! Keeping your little one close to your body is actually the best way to keep them warm and is often more comfortable than in a stroller.

The best way for babywearing in winter is to add a baby carrier cover to your carrier or to don a babywearing coat or baby carrier hoodie.

INFORMATION GUIDE

Tips & tricks for winter babywearing

Remember that the carrier counts for 1 layer: dress your child as you would yourself, but keep in mind that the baby carrier or wrap functions as a layer on its own.

Use woolen socks: use thick woolen socks to keep your little one’s toes warm.

Wool is a great temperature regulator! Check out these cute socks made from alpaca wool. (#AffiliateLink)

Use leg warmers or knee socks: leg warmers or knee socks are a great way to keep your baby’s legs, but also arms warm!

Especially when it’s not that cold outside and you don’t need a coat yet.

Our daughter was one little hottie, so we usually went outside with only a jumper, a baby wrap, some leg warmers, and our babywearing jacket.

Check out these cute leg warmers and these funky knee socks for newborns. (#AffiliateLinks)

Put your baby on as fast as possible or better yet, inside (the car): try to prevent putting your baby in the cold without winter clothes.

Especially when you’re using a baby carrier warm cover or a baby carrier coat, your little one will be in their regular clothes for a bit.

You can prepare your carrier or wrap ahead (snap the waist belt, use a carry you can tie upfront,…) or – even better – put your baby in while you’re still in the car!

Ways to carry your baby in winter

1. Carry your baby over your coat and with their own winter jacket

If you need to stay outside when your little one is out of the wrap or baby carrier, it’s a good idea to dress both of you in appropriate winter gear.

This way you prevent having to don your baby’s winter jacket and yours in the cold when you take them down.

However, it is far from comfortable, both for you and baby and you will lose the benefit of the shared body heat.

Especially when you’ve got an active toddler that still wants to be carried frequently, there might be no other way than to carry them over your coat.

2. Carry your baby over your coat with a baby carrier winter cover

Another option is to wear a winter coat yourself and carry your baby on top of it, but with a babywearing cover to protect them from the cold rather than their own jacket.

This will make your baby feel less like a little chubby Michelin man.

Another benefit is that you can take off the cover once you enter a shop or building and leave your baby on your belly or back.

Your little one will be covered from the top all the way to their legs (with an elasticized bottom that tucks nicely over their feet).

You can snap a weather cover onto the shoulder straps of baby carriers but a lot of people use them with baby wraps as well.

You can either choose a babywearing fleece cover for cold temperatures or a baby carrier rain cover to keep your baby dry.

Some brands (such as Ergobaby) even allow them to snap together.

3. Carry your baby with a baby carrier jacket that will keep both of you warm

Our preferred way to carry a baby in winter is by using a special babywearing winter coat.

This type of jacket has an extra panel that you can put either in the front and sometimes on the back too.

This creates extra space for your baby while they are on your belly or back. You can easily zip it (partially) open if they’re feeling too hot (which happened a lot with our daughter) or take it off completely when you’re getting inside (great for shopping).

In contrast to a fleece baby carrier cover, you get to take off your own jacket as well, which is a benefit if you are entering a busy store or if you get home and your little one is still asleep.

A baby carrier sweater is a great alternative if it’s not too cold or if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option.

You can either wear it separately or add your own winter coat afterward. The babywearing sweater will keep your child and your front warm.

Similarly, you can use a babywearing poncho to keep your little one and yourself dry when it’s raining but not overly cold.

The One Little Giggle winter carrier cover baby

We are completely in love with this baby carrier cover winter from One Little Giggle that’s for sale on Etsy.

For starters, they are made from super soft and warm fleece and they have another layer of sweater fleece on the outside.

This will keep your little one warm, guaranteed!

All parents who have bought this fleece baby carrier cover are absolutely lyrical about the quality.

There’s a big pouch on the front of the baby wearing cover to keep mom’s and dad’s hands warm.

Putting it on is easy: just snap the KAM snaps around the shoulder straps or fabric of your baby carrier or wrap.

An elastic makes sure that the fabric stays around your baby’s legs. That’s right, it works with wraps as well and you can even use it as a car seat cover.

With 9 patterns and colors to choose from, this is one of the prettiest baby carrier covers for winter (if you like color that is 🙂 ). but that’s not all: you can also ask for a custom-designed cover.

This baby wrap winter cover is available in 2 sizes: baby (0-9 months) and toddler (9 months – 3 years).

It’s also possible to buy the winter cover for baby carrier in a bundle with a rain cover.

Ergobaby fleece cover

PRO

  • water-resistant
  • compatible with most baby carriers
  • can be combined with the Ergobaby rain cover for an optimal protection

CON

  • difficult to align all the buttons (you have to improvise)
  • tends to fall ‘bulky’
  • not for baby wraps or ringslings
  • annoying to put on and off
  • only front-inward carrying

If you’re wondering how to keep your baby warm in a carrier, this Ergobaby cover is a great solution!

Its water-resistant shell will protect your little one from the rain or snow, while the fleece lining provides the necessary warmth, making it feel like a baby carrier blanket.

You can snap the Ergobaby winter weather cover onto the shoulder straps of your Ergobaby carrier, but it is compatible with most other baby carriers as well (although the shoulder strap covers won’t fit!).

This doesn’t mean all the snaps will line up perfectly, but you can make it work just fine. If you happen to have an older Ergobaby carrier version, you can ask the company for extensions to make it fit.

You should, however, be aware that putting it on and off can be rather annoying because you have to find the right male and female snaps.

Many parents prefer to attach it to the carrier before they put it on.

The Ergo winter cover is only suitable for use on the front-inward carry position. Furthermore, you should be aware that you can’t use it in very cold weather.

Temperatures in the ’40s and ’50s (5-10°C) are about as low as it will go.

The Ergobaby winter cover comes with a hood that will help you shield your baby from the rain or cold wind. However, it lacks strings, so it can be difficult to keep it on your baby’s head when there’s a lot of wind.

For cold and bad weather at the same time, you can always attach the Ergo rain cover to the fleece cover for complete protection.

  • large pocket for warm hands

CON

  • thin (not warm enough for winter weather)

This Bebamour Universal Hoodie is a baby carrier warm cover made out of Nylon and lined with Polyester.

It functions as a baby carrier poncho and it fits over every baby carrier with 2 buckles on the shoulder straps.

Because you attach it to your own body at the waist, it stays on pretty well.

You can also use it as a stroller blanket or car seat cover.

A big plus is the large pocket in the front that you can use to keep your hands warm.

On top of that, there are some zippers on both sides of the cover that you can either close on cold days or open up when it’s a bit warmer and baby’s feet are getting hot.

The elastics on the bottom make sure your little one’s feet stay covered.

The hat is detachable and reversible, so whichever way you prefer to carry your child, you can use it.

This baby cover for carrier isn’t machine washable. You can only hand wash with a mild detergent.

Many parents have noted that the fabric is quite thin and will not be sufficient for real winter weather.

Make sure to dress your child appropriately underneath!

The baby carrier blanket cover is pretty long so it will last a couple of seasons. The cover is available in a couple of colors, including grey, black, and pink.

Bearsland Babywearing Jacket

PRO

  • multiple colors available
  • detachable baby hood
  • budget-friendly

CON

  • quality isn’t great
  • light jacket
  • only for babywearing on the belly

This Bearsland baby wearing jacket is a 100% polyester jacket that is a lot more budget-friendly than the options above.

However, that also means that the quality isn’t comparable.

This baby carrying jacket comes with a detachable front panel.

This means you can wear your baby on the front or you can wear the jacket without a baby.

These baby wearing jackets are available in a bunch of different colors. It also comes with a detachable baby hood.

It’s best to order a size up as you may want to add a couple of layers underneath to make sure both you and baby are warm enough – this babywearing jacket is not the thickest.

Unfortunately, the seams start to loosen and the filling might pile out after a couple of months in use. Take this into account when ordering this baby wear jacket.

If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option or if you’re only planning on using it sporadically then it might be a good choice.

Otherwise, we’d recommend investing in a higher quality jacket or coat (we’ve used our Mamalila woolen baby carrier winter coat daily (Sep-Apr) for 4 years and it’s still in great shape).

Woman with baby in a Belly Bedaine Hoodie

The Belly Bedaine mom and baby hoodie carriers are a great choice when you’re choosing a sweater for babywearing.

You can carry your child on the front, the back or during pregnancy with this hoodie in knitted jersey fabric.

It’s very easy to use as you just slide it over your baby carrier. Thanks to a side zipper, the hoodie over baby carrier is easy to get on and off.

You can buy this baby carrier hoodie sweatshirt in 3 designs:

  • Kangaroo: regular version
  • Kiroo: longer than the Kangaroo
  • Kuuma: longer than the Kangaroo and thicker than the other two. Because of that thickness it is a bit less stretchy (so you might need some practice to put it over a back carry).

Don’t mistake this for a hoodie with baby carrier built in! You need to put it over a baby carrier! This is not a so-called Kangaroo hoodie, nor do we recommend using one of those.

Be aware that the Angel Wings sweater is the only men’s hoodie that fits over baby carrier we could find! However, carrying your child without proper support is DANGEROUS! Don’t do that.
