My favourite casa particular in Cuba is in the Vedado neighbourhood of Havana at Private Rooms Mylena y Otto, frequently listed online as Gran Terraza Mylena & Otto’s Apartment. Unlike most casa particulars, Otto and Mylena live off-site and rent their former residence to visitors.

Each morning, Otto and Yoly, the housekeeper, prepared a sumptuous breakfast, served on the wrap-around balcony. We took advantage of the occasion to learn more about Cuba and obtain recommendations for things to do and places to visit.

Peppering Otto with a barrage of questions was always met with helpfulness and grace. The apartment was spotless, thanks to Yoly, who meticulously cleaned it each day.

We loved the Vedado neighbourhood with its tree-lined streets, magnificent old mansions, and plenty of services within walking distance. With the help of a pamphlet prepared by Otto and Mylena, we discovered lots of nearby restaurants offering a wide selection of Cuban dishes.

Transportation into Old Havana was a few blocks away. After several hours experiencing the hectic atmosphere of Central Havana and Old Havana, we looked forward to returning to the tranquillity of Vedado and our casa particular.

Casa Mirador La Colina

To prove a point, even though the lifestyle and travel in Cuba aren’t always that easy with its frequently occurring shortages and lack of essentials, Ana and Giraldo would always go out of their way to compensate for it and ensure that our stay would be fantastic.

Casa Alexis y Dignora

Casa Alexis y Dignora is located in the municipality of Ciénaga de Zapata and just a two-minute walk from the beach.

Casa Teresa y Bartolo

When travelling around Cuba, it can be difficult to choose from all the amazing casa particulars on offer. When in Varadero, be sure to check out Teresa and Bartolo’s house located just a few steps from the bus station.

This home away from home will offer you a comfortable stay with a family that aims to take care of all your needs. The couple met me at the bus station, and while I walked across the road with them, they told me about things to do in the local area.

As well as having air conditioning and private bathrooms, the property has a large outside yard where you can sit in the morning sun or a more private veranda area attached to the room, from where you can sit with some drinks in the early evening.

Bartolo has a goat, which he would milk every morning, and he would insist on how healthy the milk is and how the family uses it to prepare breakfast dishes in the morning.

Generally, Cuba is safe, and when travelling from Havana to Varadero during the night, remember to keep your belongings with you at all times.

Varadero is more touristy than other places on the island, so if you are backpacking or travelling on a budget, be sure to carry some provisions, as it can be difficult to find some of the cheaper eateries and street food that you can find in Havana.
