Most tours to the Temple of Poseidon leave from Athens, which makes sense since the site is about 70 km away and the drive takes around 1.5 hours. Some tours run in the morning, but the sunset tour is by far the most popular option.  

We visited the temple independently by car, but if you’re short on time in Athens or not comfortable driving in a foreign country, a tour can be the easier choice. It’s convenient, well organised, and you don’t have to worry about transport or timing.

This is a 5.5-hour sunset tour done by large, air-conditioned coach. It’s the most affordable option and runs very regularly.

You meet at Platia Karaiskaki, near Metaxourghio metro station (8 min from Syntagma Square by metro), and return to the same place. Transportation is comfortable, and there’s a live guide on board who explains the history and mythology during the drive.  

Once at Cape Sounion, you have around 1.5 hours of free time to explore the site on your own and watch the sunset. 

There are some important downsides for neurodivergent families. You need to get yourself to the meeting point using public transport or a taxi (a metro ticket is €1.30 one way for everyone over 6yo), which can already be stressful.

The group is large, sunset is busy, and quiet space at the site is limited. Food and drinks are not included, eating is not allowed on the bus, and entrance tickets (€20 per adult) must be purchased separately on arrival, which often means queuing (but that’s going to be the case for any tour).
