I used to think baby carriers were just for babies.
And then I had toddlers.
Walking toddlers.
Slow toddlers.
“I can do it myself” toddlers.
Overstimulated-in-an-airport toddlers.
We ended up carrying our kids daily until they were about 3 and still packed a carrier on international trips until they were 5.
Because when your child suddenly hits sloth mode in the middle of a busy travel day… you’ll be VERY glad you brought one 🙈.
And if you have a neurodivergent child who gets easily overwhelmed? A carrier can make such a big difference in calming them down.
The good news? Choosing a toddler carrier is way less overwhelming than picking your first baby carrier.
So let’s make it even easier. Here are the best toddler carriers worth considering.

The best young toddler baby carriers: age 12-18 months
Standard baby carriers will fit your 1-year-old just fine.
It isn’t until around the age of 18 months that some of them will start lacking decent knee-to-knee support. Most, however, will fit until your kiddo is wearing a 2T (leg length).
If you’re looking for the best baby carrier for a 1-year-old to an 18-month-old, we recommend using a regular/standard carrier. Good and popular brands are Ergobaby, Tula, LILLÉbaby, and Beco.
Most carriers for toddlers can be used from 18 months old, but not before; the seat will be too wide, which will be uncomfortable for your little one.
However, if you don’t own a regular baby carrier yet and you feel it would be silly to buy one for just a short couple of months, it’s possible to tie the fabric of the seat together with a little string. That way, you can give your child knee-to-knee support without overstretching. Make sure the back panel, which is often higher to support older children, doesn’t come too high.
Despite most baby carriers only fitting well until about 18 months, there are a couple of carriers that you’ll be able to use from the newborn fase well into toddlerhood.
LennyUpgrade Pro carrier

If you want a carrier that grows with your baby, the LennyUpGrade PRO is the one for you! You can change the height and width to fit anyone from a tiny newborn to a busy toddler.
It supports weights from 3.2 kg (7 lbs) to 20 kg (44 lbs), usually from birth to around 36 months. Carry your baby front-facing from birth, and switch to back-carry around four months to make carrying heavier babies easier.
The straps can be worn H-style, like a backpack, or crossed X-style, so the weight spreads out and carrying feels easier for longer periods. You can also buy a chest belt with a magnetic buckle separately.
The padded back support is a lifesaver for long carries! The extra-long shoulder straps make it easy to get the perfect fit or nurse on the go.
The pop-on hood is a lifesaver, too. It keeps your little one’s head steady while they nap and blocks out the sun or wind. There is also a small pocket on the waist belt with a magnetic closure, which is handy for a phone or keys.
Plus, the fabric feels amazing! LennyLamb uses soft, woven wrap materials (like cotton or bamboo blends). It is soft yet still very supportive, perfect if your little one is fussy or has sensitive skin.
The LennyUpGrade PRO is easy to adjust, but there are a few things you only notice once you start using it. It’s really adjustable, which is great, but it’s also much more structured and padded than LennyLight; it doesn’t fold up small, so it can be tricky to fit into a diaper bag.
Because it’s made of multiple layers of padded woven fabric, it can get pretty hot for both you and the baby if it’s warm or humid.
The adjustability is great, but it also means there’s a learning curve. If the straps or panel aren’t set right, they can dig in, or the baby can end up sitting too low. The waist belt or straps can sometimes rub your baby’s legs and leave red marks if they aren’t positioned just right.
The shoulder straps can slowly loosen as you move, so give them a quick tug to keep them tight. The hip buckle has a safety loop, which is good, but it can get caught when you clip it. If it is not fastened perfectly, the buckle might pop open.
Overall, it’s a very solid carrier and my favourite one if you’re looking for a carrier that grows with your kid. However, it’s not lightweight and takes some time to learn how to adjust, plus it’s not the best one if you live in (or are planning to travel to) warmer climates.

Boba X
The Boba X carrier is made from a breathable 100% cotton fabric, which makes it very comfortable for your little one!
We’re usually not too fond of recommending a baby carrier that is adjustable from newborn to toddler. It’s great in theory and we’re sure the fabric will be strong enough to support the weight.
However, experience has taught us that once upper bodies and legs start to grow, our kiddos won’t be all that comfortable anymore in a baby carrier.
We make an exception for the Boba X though!
Both the seat (8-21″/20-53 cm) and the panel body (12-16″/30-40 cm) micro-adjusts to fit your child’s body perfectly.
On top of that, they thought about the baby wearers as well: the carrier comes with a 25-58″ (63.5-147 cm) waist belt. This way, it will fit just about anybody!
An absolutely great feature of the Boba X is the seat extenders and the foot straps. That way even older toddlers will be able to sit comfortably with their knees up!
As is customary for Boba, the designs are lovely.
LennyLight compact carrier

The LennyLight is perfect if you want a baby carrier that is simple and easy. It is lightweight, compact, and does not have many straps or hard buckles. It works well for quick trips or busy days because it is fast to put on and take off.
You can use it from birth (3.2–3.5 kg) through the toddler years (20 kg). It works for carrying your baby on your front from day one and on your back starting around four months.
The shoulder straps and hip belt are soft and comfortable, which is great if you or your child has sensitive skin. The chest buckle is magnetic, so it clicks together by itself. You can slide it up or down the shoulder straps, or just take it off.
It also has a mesh bag for small items and a waist pocket with a magnetic clip for your phone or keys. Everything is simple and easy to use.
The LennyLight is light and easy to use, but it works best for smaller bodies. The 18-inch shoulder straps can feel too short for plus-size users.
For more comfort, the LennyUpGrade PRO has longer 22.5-inch straps that fit larger frames better. The magnetic chest strap is easy to use, but it may feel less secure than a regular buckle. If you are used to standard clips, it can take a little time to learn.
The LennyLight doesn’t include a matching hood. You’ll need to buy it separately if you want sun protection or a cover for naps, which can be inconvenient when you’re trying to keep things simple while out and about.
The LennyLight is great for short, light trips or if you’re team stroller but like to have the back-up of a carrier. But if you need longer straps, more support, or a hood, you might want to look at other options.

The best Toddler Carriers: ages 2 – 4
By the time your child hits two, you’ll likely notice that your trusty baby carrier isn’t quite cutting it anymore. The seat feels too narrow, the back panel doesn’t come up high enough, and your toddler just looks a bit… squished. That’s your cue to size up.
The good news is that there are some really great carriers made specifically for this age, and finding the right one makes carrying a heavier child a lot more manageable.
LennyLamb Preschool

The LennyLamb Preschool is one of those carriers that genuinely grows with your child, covering the toddler years all the way through to preschool age, from around 1 to 6 years old and up to 66 lbs.
The name is a little confusing, I know: you’d expect a carrier called “Preschool” to start at preschool age, but it actually fits from toddler age onwards, which makes it a really smart buy.
So if you’re buying a carrier for a 2-year-old and want something that will last, this is a solid choice.
The fabric is soft but strong, the panel adjusts easily as your child grows, and the padded straps and cushioned leg openings make longer carries noticeably more comfortable.
The waist belt takes a good amount of the weight off your shoulders, which you’ll appreciate on busier days out. The magnetic hood is a nice touch too: easy to pop on for naps, sun, or wind without any fiddling.
There’s a small pocket on the waist belt for your phone or keys, and the carrier comes in some really lovely designs (wrap conversions!) if that matters to you.
A few things to keep in mind: the shoulder straps can feel a little wide on narrower frames, and the thick fabric means it can get warm in hot weather. It can also feel slightly bulky on younger or smaller toddlers, so if your two-year-old is on the smaller side, it’s worth checking the sizing carefully before you buy.

Tula Toddler
Carrying a toddler is no joke, and comfort really matters for both you and your kid. Although not as well-known in the US as they are in Europe, the Tula baby carrier brand is a great choice if you’re looking for a backpack carrier for toddlers.
As with the other Tula carriers, it is comfortable and durable. It feels soft on the shoulders and neck, and the padding around the leg openings keeps your toddler comfortable, so the fabric doesn’t dig in.
The back panel comes up high on the back of your child, which is something many people like.
Adjusting the Tula is simple. It only has two main buckles, waist and chest, so you can put it on in under 30 seconds. The straps are long, and the waistband stretches from 27 to 56 inches, which works well for bigger caregivers.
It’s sturdy enough for heavy toddlers and holds up well over the years, even after lots of washes. And it has a big pocket on the waist belt, too!
The Tula Toddler can carry your child from 25 lbs and up to 4+ years. They should be a minimum of 32″ tall.
Typical for the Baby Tula brand is the beautifully designed and colourful patterns they use for their carriers. Each carrier comes with a colour-matched, detachable hood for sun protection, nursing privacy, or head support while your child naps.
Things to consider when buying a Tula toddler: the waistband can feel stiff if you’re petite or have a short torso, and it might press on your ribs or pelvic area.
This baby carrier can only be used for front and back positions, and the shoulder straps are designed to be worn over the shoulders like a backpack and cannot be crossed in the back.
The pocket on the waistband is tricky to reach when your kid is in it.
The standard cotton canvas is breathable but can get hot in the sun, so if you’re in a warmer climate, the Tula Coast Mesh is a better choice.
Beco Toddler
If you’ve got a toddler who’s always on the move, the Beco Toddler Carrier is a really solid option. It has all the cool features of the original Beco carrier, but suits children from age 18 months up until 6+!
The seat is wide, and the back panel is tall, so it keeps your child’s legs in that ergonomic “M-position,” which is great if they’re long-legged or squirmy.
You can wear your baby on the front (face inward) and on the back.
The shoulder straps are crossable in case your not-so-little-anymore-toddler likes to be carried on your belly, which is a great relief for your back!
There’s also extra padding in the straps and the leg holes, a large pocket on the belt, and a detachable zipper clutch.
The padded straps and lumbar support make long days much easier. Honestly, for a sturdy, long-lasting toddler carrier that fits all kinds of kids and caregivers, this one’s hard to beat!
The brand claims to fit all sizes of caregivers perfectly, from XS to XXL (they offer waist belt extenders), and parents seem to agree.
Safety-wise, it’s solid. The buckles on the shoulders and waist are a three-point release system. That means it takes two hands to unlatch, so no accidental slips.
The only small downsides are that the buckles are secure but hard to open with one hand. And because it is so heavily padded for 60 lb kids, it can feel massive on petite caregivers.
The standard cotton model works fine, but if you’re hiking or in warm climates, I’d recommend the Beco Cool version. It’s got moisture-wicking microfiber and a 3D mesh panel that keeps both you and your child cooler.
The best preschool carrier: age 4+
By the time your child is four, carrying might feel like something you do less often, but you’ll still be glad you have a carrier on hand.
Some preschoolers are done with it entirely, others still want up regularly, and plenty fall somewhere in between: perfectly happy to walk until they suddenly, absolutely aren’t.
For our kids, carrying at this age was mostly about travel and long days out. A busy airport, a theme park, a city trip where little legs ran out of steam earlier than expected. Having a carrier that actually fits a bigger child properly made those moments so much easier to handle.
If your child is on the more sensitive side or gets overwhelmed in busy environments, a carrier can still be a really valuable tool at this age too.
LennyLamb Preschool

The LennyPreschool Carrier works really well for bigger kids. The fabric is soft but strong, and you can adjust it to fit, so it’s comfy for kids from 1 to 6 years old, up to 66 lbs.
The panel adjusts easily, so it fits your child snug and stays comfortable as they grow. I love that it grows with your kid, so you don’t have to keep buying new carriers every few years.
The straps are padded, the waist belt really helps your back, and the leg openings are cushioned, so long walks or trips feel easier.
It comes with a matching hood that you can take off, perfect for supporting your child’s head or shielding them from the sun or wind, but to be fair, at this age, we don’t use it anymore as naps in the carrier are long gone.
The waist belt has a small pocket with a magnet fastener, which is really handy. You can throw in your phone, keys, or a few little things.
It also comes in different wrap conversions, so you can pick one that really fits your style. I like that it looks nice while still being practical, especially when I’m carrying a bigger kid.
It works great, but there are a few small things to keep in mind. The shoulder straps can feel wide on narrow shoulders and may rub during long wear.
The padding is not very long; the unpadded part can press into the skin for broader wearers.
The carrier is best for bigger kids, but it can feel bulky on smaller toddlers. The thick fabric is supportive and very cosy but can get warm in hot weather.

The best Toddler carrier for hot weather
When it comes to carrying a toddler in summer, make sure to follow the standard rules for wearing a child in high temperatures:
- Stay in the shade as much as possible
- Hydrate
- Take regular breaks.
A lot of people prefer a soft structured carrier for toddlers over a wrap or sling because those tiny walking humans tend to run around, hop in, hop out and repeat.
Can you imagine tying your wrap a zillion times in 90 degrees?
If you do prefer wrapping your toddler, choose a woven wrap to prevent shoulder and back pain. You don’t need a special toddler wrap. I recommend a blend with linen for coolness.
Happy baby Toddler

If your little one isn’t a baby anymore but still wants to be carried, Happy Baby Toddler is a great fit. It’s made for toddlers wearing at least 2T, with a taller panel and wider seat for proper knee-to-knee support.
Happy Baby has an apron-style waistband that spreads the weight so you can sit comfortably without a bulky belt digging into your stomach.
It’s made from European linen, hemp, and organic cotton. It’s also 30–50% lighter than most soft-structured carriers, and on hot days, you really notice it. The fabric is breathable and gets softer the more you use it.
They’re custom-woven, safely dyed, and come in beautiful plain colors. It blends luxury with everyday function.
You can wear it on the front for closeness or switch to a back carry for longer days out.
The shoulder straps have shock-absorbing padding, the leg openings are cushioned, and it stays comfortable even on long walks. It’s designed for toddlers from 20 to 60 pounds.
The fit is fully adjustable, from XXS (23-inch waist) up to 5XL (54-inch waist), and you can add an 18-inch extender belt if needed. That makes it easy to share between caregivers without a fuss.
There’s also a hidden pocket with a hood and just enough room for a small extra. When you’re done, it folds up small enough to tuck into a diaper bag.
While the Happy Baby Toddler Carrier is praised for being lightweight and breathable, the waist strap might dig in, and the shoulder straps can feel a little thin too.
It takes some fiddling to get the adjustments right, or your back will start complaining on longer walks. The seat can leave little red marks, and buckling the chest strap or attaching the sun hood alone is tricky.
Tip: When washing, keep it away from sharp or rough objects that could snag the fabric

LÍLLÉbaby CarryOn Airflow
Carrying a toddler can be exhausting, but the LÍLLÉbaby CarryOn Airflow handles heavy kids without straining your back and is a perfect partner when babywearing in regular to warm climates!
It is suitable for children from 25 up to 60 lbs and comes in multiple colours. The toddler carrying backpack has 3-way adjustable straps, a removable hood, and features 2 pockets.
It also has three carry options: front for cuddling and keeping an eye on your kid, hip lets them look around while still feeling held, and back for longer walks.
The biggest plus of the CarryOn is its wider and taller torso, which keeps even taller children comfortable. The seat is also wide, which keeps their legs from dangling and putting pressure on sensitive points.
The shoulder straps are dense and plush, and the wide waist belt really shifts the weight off your shoulders to your hips. There’s also a structured lumbar pad to protect your lower back.
It is made completely out of mesh fabric. This way it provides airflow for both yourself and your toddler, which is pretty useful if you or your little one sweats easily.
The carrier can be machine-washed on a cold cycle, but I recommend hanging it to dry to keep it in good shape.
A few things to know: it’s not tiny. You might find it bulky and hard to stuff into a diaper bag. Petite caregivers might find the torso a bit stiff or long.
The waistband goes up to 48 inches, with an extender you can buy separately if you need it.
Beco Toddler Cool
The Toddler version of the Beco Cool has all its cool features and transformed to suit children from age 18m up until 6+!
This carrier is breathable, especially on warm days. There’s a moisture-wicking microfiber layer and a 3D mesh panel that lets air flow through.
You can carry your little one in two ways: on your chest for cuddles or on your back for a piggyback style.
The shoulder straps are soft and crossable in case your not-so-little-anymore-toddler likes to be carried on your belly, which is a great relief for your back!
There’s a zippered bag, a detachable hood you can use for shade or even as a nursing cover, and a small pocket for keys or cards. The high back panel shapes nicely to your child’s body, so they feel supported.
The brand claims to fit all sizes of caregivers perfectly, from XS to XXL (they offer waist belt extenders) and parents seem to agree.
The buckle is super secure, which is great, but you need two hands to open it. That can be tricky if you’re in a hurry to get your kid out. The little pockets are useful for keys or cards, but they’re too small for all the stuff you’d need on a long hike.
The mesh isn’t as soft as cotton, so if your child has sensitive skin, I’d put a shirt with sleeves on it just to be safe.
The Beco Toddler Cool is perfect for warm climates and busy days outdoors. It’s lightweight, breathable, and sturdy, and it grows with your kid.
Best Hiking Carriers for Toddlers
Hiking is not an easy outdoor activity. More so when carrying a child with you. But it’s more fun!
Embarking on hiking adventures with a young child requires the best back carrier for a toddler to ensure both comfort and safety. These should be lightweight, too.
We recommend a carrier that strike the balance between comfort and functionality.
These are not only tailored to accommodate the unique needs of your toddler but also offer you the convenience of hands-free exploration in rugged terrains.
Adjustable straps, multiple mesh pockets, and waterproof material? We got you!
Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier
Your most precious cargo will find themselves comfortable in this Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier.
The back panel is made with Aircomfort mesh similar to trekking backpacks that provides maximum ventilation, so air can flow between you and the pack. The seat is secure and cosy, so your kid can sit safely for hours without fidgeting or sliding around.
The frame is flexible but really strong, made from break-proof spring steel, and not only do these ensure the carrier stays in place, but they also guarantee that you’re carrying an even load.
That’s a big deal when you’re carrying a toddler or preschooler for long stretches!
It adjusts really well, too! The Vari Slide system lets you change the back length, so it fits perfectly whether you’re tall or short.
Designed with parents in mind, this carrier has a sunroof, hip fins, load adjustment straps, sternum belt, a padded hip belt, and two elastic side pockets with adjustable hooks. Also, it is comfortable enough that your kid can sleep in it!
Besides being sturdy, this carrier is lightweight, allowing you to enjoy pleasant hikes for hours!
The Deuter Child Comfort carrier can carry a child weighing up to 52.9 lbs!
Just a heads up! This model doesn’t include a chin pad. If your kid leans forward a lot, you might want a scarf or soft cloth for comfort, or you can buy a chin pad separately.
With 14 litres of storage, it’s smaller than some competitors, like the Osprey Poco (24L) and Thule Sapling (22L).
The sunshade is fully removable, and high side mesh pockets make water bottles hard to reach.
Luvdbaby Hiking Carrier Backpack
Luvdbaby Hiking Carrier Backpack is your perfect completion for a hike with your toddler.
The seat is padded like a little cocoon, and the safety straps and stirrups keep their legs supported comfortably. There’s even a sun visor that you can attach or remove, which is great for shielding your child from sun or light rain.
The carrier is designed to protect your back, too! The straps are thickly padded, and the belt actually takes some of the weight off your shoulders.
You can adjust the height of both the seat and the harness so it fits your body and your growing child. It can handle kids up to about 40 pounds, so it really grows with them.
Aside from heavily padded and adjustable straps and a load-bearing belt, it features multiple mesh pockets for easy carrying of your valuables and belongings.
Designed for long hikes, it also includes a diaper-changing pad for when your precious one calls for one.
The carrier is made from waterproof Ripstop Polyester, so it handles scrapes and rough weather really well. The aluminium frame is strong and stable, and the kick-out stand lets you safely set it down whenever you need a break.
A few things to know: it doesn’t fold flat, so it takes up space in your car or closet. It’s heavier than a basic carrier because of all the extra features, so you might feel tired on long or steep hikes.
The synthetic material isn’t as breathable against your back as some high-end brands, so you might feel a bit warm if you’re hiking in hot weather. The hip belt pockets are handy, but zipping them one-handed while moving can be tricky.
Overall, this carrier is a solid choice if you want something feature-packed without paying Deuter or Osprey prices. It’s safe, comfortable, and built to last, and it has all the extras parents need for outdoor adventures
Best Hip Carriers for Toddlers
If you’re looking for an easier way to carry your toddler, hip seat carriers is a practical and comfortable option for you.
We recommend one that will provide you comfort and ease of movement to your little one.
Do know that this won’t be the best option for you: carrying your toddler on your hip asks a lot of your body. But if you have a little one who doesn’t want to be in an SSC carrier anymore, but often needs to be picked up, it might be a good alternative.
Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier
The Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier is a lightweight product. Multipurpose, it also serves as a diaper bag.
The seat itself is firm, with no extra padding or bulky fabric. There’s no wrapping, no complicated straps, nothing to fuss with. You just Velcro the belt, click the buckle, and place the baby on the shelf.
It’s not fully hands-free since you need one arm on your child, but it’s much easier than holding them all the time. The plastic frame is lightweight but sturdy, and it doesn’t lose shape, even with daily use.
The carrier has back support and a wide waist belt, and allows multiple carry positions: side carrying, front-facing, face-to-face, and feeding positions.
You can rest assured that this product will bring comfort to your child. No putting pressure on your back and hips, this seat carrier is comfortable for you as well. It won’t hurt your spine!
You get five pockets to store everything you need. A large one under the seat holds diapers and wipes. Other pockets hold a bottle, phone, and keys. It is great for the airport or zoo when you do not want to carry a big bag.
The standard belt fits waists from 23 to 44 inches; belt extenders sold separately up to 70 inches.
The Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier can carry a child weighing up to 45 lbs.
There are a few things to watch out for. The seat sticks out a bit, so tight spaces like airplane aisles or crowded stores can be tricky. The Velcro is loud, so taking it off near a sleeping baby is noisy.
And because there aren’t straps, the seat can tilt if the belt isn’t tight enough, which puts pressure on your pelvic bone. Still, for the up-and-down toddler phase, it’s one of the most supportive carriers I’ve tried.
Overall, it’s not for hands-free play, but if you want something easy to use, supports your back, and carries a toddler with ease, this is a really solid choice!

Information Guide
What is a baby carrier for toddlers?
A baby carrier toddler is the same backpack-like item to carry your baby hands-free as a regular baby carrier – the only difference is that it’s made especially for toddlers and bigger children.
While the waist belt and shoulder straps offer the same support for the caregivers there are several adjustments for your toddler or preschooler.
The fabric of the seat is wider, making sure that important knee-to-knee support is offered.
Furthermore, the back panel is wider and higher to adjust to the growing body of your child.
All of this will make sure your little one sits safely into the M (or what we also call “frog”) position and has sufficient support in the back to comfortably spend a couple of hours in the kids’ baby carrier, even if they decide to take a nap.
What are the Differences Between Baby Carriers and Toddler Carriers?
The differences between baby carriers and toddler carriers are their size and overall design.
Toddler carriers are larger than baby carriers and provide enhanced support at the back panel.
Like regular baby carriers, all toddler carriers can be used for front (facing inward) and back wearing. Some can also be used for hip wearing, but in my experience, toddlers get too big to do this comfortably as a babywearer.
Why would you use baby carriers for toddlers?
Many baby carriers claim they can hold bigger children – often up to 45 lbs – and while that is not a lie (they were indeed tested to endure such weights) it doesn’t take comfort and support into account.
Once your baby reaches the 18-month point, you’ll start noticing that they don’t get full knee-to-knee support anymore.
While a 2/3rd support is considered still all right, we’d only recommend continuing to use your previous carrier if you doubt you’ll still be carrying your 2-year-old.
If that is the case, you can keep on using your regular baby carrier or infant-to-toddler adaptable carrier. Buying a new toddler-wearing carrier is an expensive purchase after all.
However, once they’ve reached that 2-year mark, they won’t be comfortable or supported enough anymore.
A lot of parents continue to carry their toddlers well into the preschool years, so buying a decent, bigger child carrier isn’t that far-fetched.
What are the benefits of using a carrier for a toddler?
There are many benefits to using a carrier for a toddler, including:
- Allowing toddlers to walk without getting too exhausted
- Letting them sleep in the carrier and avoid having to bring along a stroller
- Providing a comfortable way for toddlers to rest while still being able to explore their surroundings
- Being specifically developed for toddlers and preschoolers, so they are a perfect size and have all the features that toddlers and older children need
- Offering a calming, regulating space for neurodivergent toddlers who may become overstimulated in busy environments, helping them feel secure and connected while on the go

When do you use a baby carrier for toddlers?
Honestly? For almost everything.
You can use a toddler (back) carrier in more situations than you might expect. When they’re around 1 year old or 18 months, you’ll likely keep babywearing much the same way you did when they were younger: around the house while doing chores, on walks, at the shop or mall, when travelling, or to help them fall asleep.
Toddlers are famously independent… until they’re not.
They’ll insist on walking and then, about a hundred feet later, demand to be picked up. Little legs tire quickly, so many 2- and even 3-year-olds still spend a surprising amount of time in the carrier.
And it doesn’t necessarily stop there. Preschoolers may still enjoy being carried occasionally, especially on long outings, city trips, or hikes. Bringing a toddler carrier along, whether at home or while travelling, gives you flexibility when energy levels suddenly drop.
For neurodivergent toddlers and preschoolers, a carrier can be especially helpful. Busy environments, new places, or long travel days can quickly become overwhelming. Being carried provides closeness, deep pressure, and a sense of security that can help them regulate and feel safe while still being part of the adventure.
In short: if your child still fits comfortably and you both enjoy it, there’s no real “cut-off” age for using a carrier.
What are the Types of Toddler Carriers?
There are 5 common types of toddler carriers worth considering: soft-structured carriers, structured carriers, and hip seat carriers.
- Soft-structured carriers, the most popular type, feature padded shoulder straps and a waistband, facilitating versatile wear. They allow you to carry your little one either forward-facing or on your back.
- Backpack carriers for toddlers, as their name implies, resemble backpacks. With framed seats, these are more structured but are less flexible in terms of carrying positions, typically accommodating only back-carrying. Nevertheless, these are the favourite choice for hiking because they’ll give you backpack space as well! But mind that these aren’t typically considered to be ergonomic.
- Hip seat carriers, on the other hand, function like a waist belt or pouch where your toddler can sit. One notable advantage is that they don’t cause pressure on your shoulders and back! But well, these are not actual carriers and you’ll still need your hands to support your kid.
- Wrap carriers are a piece of fabric that wraps around you and your child to secure them to your chest or back. They’re compact, which makes them great for travelling, but are not sturdy for intense activities such as hiking. While the fit is customizable, it can be challenging to get it right.
- Sling carriers, also known as ring slings, are pieces of fabric that have a ring at both ends. They’re lightweight, breathable, and compact, which makes them great for travelling and hands-free tasks. These also allow you to carry your child at the front or back. However, it can pose restrictions around the neck.
What are the Toddler Carrying Styles?
There are three toddler carrying styles or positions: front, back and side carry. There isn’t a single best position; it depends on your and your child’s needs in a given situation.
- The front carry involves wearing your child on your chest, whether facing you or outward. This position is best for younger toddlers, but might put a strain on your neck and back (I know it always does for me). None of the toddler carriers will offer an outward-facing position; keep your baby looking at you at all times (I know some regular baby carriers do offer that kind of carry because there’s been demand, but really, they only advise to use it 10 minutes at a time.)
- The back carry is the top choice for toddlers and preschoolers. In fact, once our kids hit 18 months, we almost exclusively wore them like this. It’s easy, convenient and they get to look around or put down their head to sleep. Win-win.
- The side carry allows you to wear your toddler on your hips, resembling a natural way of carrying a child. Some toddler carriers offer this option, but to be fair, crossing the shoulder straps might get a little annoying with bigger toddlers. If your kiddo only wants to be in this position, you might want to look into a hip carrier like the Tushbaby Hip Seat Carrier.

Things to keep in mind when buying toddler carriers
📌 Back carry
When babywearing toddlers, most caregivers prefer a toddler back carrier because an older child is heavier for your body and it’s easier to do other things.
Putting them on the back will allow you to move freely while having them on the front or on the hip will always hinder you in some way or the other.
Which obviously doesn’t mean it’s impossible to babywear your toddler like that. Your little one might prefer it if they are sick or really tired.
And especially with a young toddler, it’s still very feasible to do so. I only started to refuse Little Elf’s request when she turned 3 and Kath still carried her occasionally on the front up until age 5.
📌 Carrier or wrap?
While wrap carriers for toddlers are excellent (they’re strong enough to support a really big child!), I find them a little cumbersome to use with a toddler who wants to go up and down all the time.
However, my friend is a total wrap addict and happily carried her 3-year-old daughter in a wrap carry when she was tired.
So it all comes down to preferences. As many parents prefer SSCs, I will be focusing on actual (back) carriers for toddlers in this article.
📌 Size
Remember that so-called ‘toddler carriers’ are usually only suitable for older toddlers (age 2, sometimes 2,5, or 3 years old).
We bought a Wompat Toddler when our daughter just turned 2. According to the size chart, the Toddler was meant for children aged 2-4.
However, it didn’t fit her properly until she was about 3.5 years old! Because the back panel was too large/deep and the seat too wide, she wasn’t comfortable at all. Picking the right size is important!

Best carriers for toddlers and preschoolers: Frequently Asked Questions
Which carrier is best for toddlers?
Which carrier is best for toddlers? The LennyLamb Preschool is our top pick for toddlers. Despite the name, it fits from around 1 year old all the way to 6 years old and up to 66 lbs, making it one of the most versatile carriers out there. It’s the one we have and use ourselves, and it’s hard to beat for comfort, longevity, and value.
Is a toddler carrier worth it?
Toddler carriers are definitely worth it! Not only do they allow tired toddlers to walk without getting too exhausted, but they also let them sleep in the carrier and avoid having to bring along a stroller.
And if you have a neurodivergent child, they can regulate so much better when they’re close to you, with the gentle pressure and movement of being carried helping them feel calm and safe in busy or overwhelming environments.
Can you put a 2-year-old in a baby carrier?
Of course you can! A 2-year-old is still very much a small child who can’t walk everything themselves, just like you wouldn’t expect them to manage a full day out without a stroller. Carrying them is completely normal at this age.
That said, if you’re looking at carriers for a 2-year-old, it’s worth considering upgrading to an actual toddler carrier rather than sticking with your regular baby carrier. By this age, most standard baby carriers are starting to fall short: the seat is too narrow to give proper knee-to-knee support, and the back panel often doesn’t come up high enough for a growing body.
A toddler carrier is designed with all of this in mind, which means it’s more comfortable for your child and, honestly, a lot more comfortable for you too when you’re carrying extra weight over longer distances.
What is the best carrier for a 2-year-old?
Our top pick is the LennyLamb Preschool. One of the things that sets it apart is that it fits from around 1 year old, while many toddler carriers only really fit well from a size 2T onwards.
This means that if your 2-year-old is on the smaller side, it’s worth checking their size before buying, as a lot of toddler carriers will still be too big for them to sit in comfortably.
The LennyLamb Preschool gives you a much better chance of a good fit earlier on, without having to wait until your child grows into it.
Can you put a 3-year-old in a carrier?
Absolutely! A toddler carrier can be used for a 3-year-old. In fact, many parents find that carriers are especially useful as older toddlers still get tired quickly or have a hard time walking long distances.
There are carriers specifically developed for toddlers and preschoolers. My personal favourite is the LennyLamb Preschool!
Can you put a 4-year-old in a carrier?
While each child is different, many parents find that a carrier is useful for a 4-year-old. Carriers can help when travelling longer distances or when your little one becomes overwhelmed and needs to be close to a parent.
To accommodate their growing bodies, we recommend choosing a preschool carrier for a 4-year-old. My top pick is the LennyLamb Preschool; it’s the one I use!
Is Ergobaby good for toddlers?
Unfortunately, Ergobaby is not the best baby carrier for toddlers as it is too small, even though the weight limit is not reached. Ergobaby is recommended only for children up to 18 months old. We wore our kids extensively with the Ergobaby Regular (kid 1) and the Ergobaby Cool Air Mesh (kid 2). We love Ergobaby, but it’s really not suitable for a toddler.
Are toddler hip carriers good?
Hip carriers are useful, especially if your toddler wants to get on and off the regular carrier. It’s easier than just carrying them in your arms.
As a toddler, our daughter did not want to be in the carrier, especially when we were visiting hot countries like Malaysia. So she often sat on the carrier worn around Kath’s waist for support.
But always keep in mind that they aren’t “real” carriers; you won’t have your hands free.
Can you use a baby carrier for a toddler?
Absolutely, and we’d actually encourage it. Babywearing doesn’t have to stop when your child starts walking; in many ways, it becomes even more useful. Toddlers are unpredictable: one minute they’re off and running, the next they’re done and want to be carried. Having a carrier on hand means you’re ready for either.
That said, if your child is around 18 months or older, it’s worth thinking about whether your current baby carrier is still giving them the support they need.
Most baby carriers have a weight limit that technically covers toddler age, but weight is only part of the story. The seat on a standard baby carrier is often too narrow for proper knee-to-knee support at this age, and the back panel may not come up high enough for a growing body.
A toddler carrier is designed with all of this in mind, so if you’re planning to carry regularly, it’s worth making the upgrade.
What is the largest preschool carrier?
If you’re looking for maximum coverage, the LennyLamb Preschool is hard to beat. The panel height adjusts from 38 cm to 51 cm (roughly 15 to 20 inches), and the seat width adjusts from 25 cm to 58 cm (roughly 10 to 23 inches), giving it a really generous range that works from toddler age all the way through to around 6 years old. The fact that it’s fully adjustable also means you’re not stuck with one fixed size as your child grows.
When can you stop using a baby carrier?
You can stop using a baby carrier as soon as your child is comfortable to walk the distances you want to go. This is around the same time you’d stop using a stroller.
You might also find it hard to use a carrier at some point. I couldn’t wear our daughter for a significant time after she turned 4. So, my advice would be to listen to your body and to your kid.
Are ring slings good for toddlers?
In theory, ring slings are easy to put on and off, so they can come in handy with a toddler. But they also put a strain on your neck, shoulders, and hip. So, I guess it depends on your body. I wouldn’t be able to, but I’m sure many babywearers can.
Final thoughts on the best carriers for toddlers and preschoolers
Finding the right carrier for a toddler or preschooler takes a little more thought than picking your first baby carrier, but it’s absolutely worth it. The carrying years go faster than you expect, and having a carrier that actually fits your child properly makes those last stretches of babywearing so much more enjoyable for both of you.
Whether you’re after something that grows with your child from toddler to preschool age, a lightweight option for warm weather, or a sturdy carrier for hiking, there’s something on this list for every family.
Our personal favourite is the LennyLamb Preschool, but the best carrier is always the one that fits your child, suits your lifestyle, and that you’ll actually reach for when those little legs give out mid-adventure.
