Our family sure loves visiting countries that are diverse, and Colombia is one of the most unforgettable places we’ve been to. You can go trekking at Tayrona Park, marvel at the beautiful waterfall of Cascada Juan Curi, and explore Medellín and Bogotá!
The diversity of its tourist destinations definitely makes Colombia an appealing country for tourists, it’s the gateway to South America for a reason!
We visited a lot of its hotspots to make detailed itineraries including accommodations, the best places to visit, and how to get around Colombia.

Colombia Accommodations
Best Time to Visit Colombia
Colombia is a tropical country, so generally, the weather is sunny. But, to maximize your trip, there are certain months when it’s best to explore the different regions.
If you’re going to Andean Region (Bogota, Medellín, Cali, Villa De Leyva), it’s best to visit between December and March. There might be occasional rain showers, but most of the time it’s dry.
If you’re exploring the Caribbean Coast (Cartagena, Palomino, Minca), any month is a good month. If you plan to visit Zona Cafetera (Salento), the last week of March to the last week of June is the best time.
Finally, if your itinerary is Santander (San Gil), December to March is another good time to travel.
Best Places to Stay in Colombia
Modern hotels are good to stay at, but if you want the authentic Colombian experience, consider booking privately owned hostels. The typical price of hostels in rural areas ranges from $20 to $30 USD per night.
You will get hostels with balconies for $60 per night. And if you’re willing to splurge a little, $95 to $120 USD per night will get you a really nice location with a beautiful view.
In urbanized cities, hotels are more prevalent. You should expect around $120 to $180 USD for a family room. Beach hotels on the Caribbean Coast typically cost $35 USD per night and $240 USD for more luxurious casas.
Best Way to Get Around Colombia
The best way to get around Colombia for shorter trips is via public bus. Companies like Expreso Brasilia, Expreso Bolivariano, Copetran, and Berlinas del Fonce have multiple trips to various destinations.
You can also take express vans or Colectivos for which you pay a fixed price. This is the best option if you’re traveling with kids.
Taxi is another option if you’re going to a place with less public transportation. Negotiation is the key because not all of them have meters.
